Causes of unemployment problem in Bangladesh:

Due to the rapid growth of population in Bangladesh and the corresponding lack of creation of wealth and employment opportunities, the problem of unemployment has become serious day by day. According to the 2011 census data, 13.38 million out of 12.74 million people, i.e. almost one-third of the total labor force, were unemployed. At present the unemployed population is more than 3 crores. No single cause can be blamed for these unemployment. Rather, there are many reasons behind the unemployment problem. The factors directly and indirectly responsible for unemployment in Bangladesh are discussed below.

Unemployment problem in Bangladesh

1. Underdeveloped and archaic agricultural systems:
Underdeveloped and primitive world is directly responsible for unemployment in Bangladesh. In this country, land is still cultivated with wooden plows and weak oxen of the Mandhata period. As a result production does not increase as expected. The number of seasonal and disguised unemployment is increasing day by day. Moreover, the agricultural system of Bangladesh largely depends on the seasonal climate. As a result, fortunately, timely rains and floods lead to good harvests and when the reverse is the case, people’s misery is boundless. And this is why the number of unemployment in Bangladesh increases.

2. Weak Economic Structure:
A weak and inefficient economic structure is responsible for unemployment in Bangladesh. Bangladesh government is also responsible for the unemployment of the people. The economic structure at the individual level of the Bangladesh government and people is so weak that it becomes impossible for anyone to invest capital in large manufacturing industries. Due to this, it is not possible to create employment opportunities for the growing number of unemployed. So a weak economic structure cannot reduce the number of unemployed at the local and national levels

3. Backwardness in Industry:
In the present world, the number of industrial establishments is increasing rapidly in some countries. But the number of industrial establishments in Bangladesh is not increasing due to various reasons. As a result, no employment opportunities can be created for the increased people. Moreover, the extinction of cottage industries has also increased the unemployment problem in Bangladesh rapidly.

4. Lack of technical knowledge:
Due to the lack of modern technology and technical knowledge, the labor force of Bangladesh is failing in various fields to get employment opportunities. Because technical knowledge is very necessary to get employment in industries. But as a large part of the labor force of this country lacks that knowledge, most of them are forced to lead an unemployed life.

5. Lack of Capital:
Most people in Bangladesh are poor. Many of those who are not poor do not have the financial means to save again. And if there is no savings, it is not possible to raise capital for investment in industry. Therefore, as the process of industrialization is being disrupted due to lack of necessary capital, many people are forced to live unemployed lives.

6. Illiteracy and Ignorance:
Illiteracy and ignorance is a fundamental cause of unemployment in Bangladesh. Many cannot engage themselves in any work due to lack of proper education and literacy. As a result, many are forced to live unemployed lives.

As a result of population explosion, it is not possible to increase the scope of other facilities including employment. Currently, the population growth in Bangladesh is increasing the unemployment problem in various ways.

9. Unskilled Manpower:
Lack of appropriate training, skills and experience at the public and private levels is a significant feature of our country’s manpower. Due to lack of appropriate skills and experience, they are deprived of various job opportunities. As a result, the curse of unemployment grips them.

10. Values and Attitudes:
Values and attitudes are directly and indirectly responsible for creating unemployment in Bangladesh. Many are willing to do menial jobs due to hereditary status, higher education etc. is not As a result, they create various problems and obstacles in the society with the curse of unemployment.

11. Layoffs:
Retrenchment of workers at the private sector in Bangladesh is a common occurrence. Frequent layoffs compound the unemployment problem in Bangladesh. Unskilled workers are industries for some reason. In case of retrenchment from the organization, due to lack of skills, they become unemployed without being able to find other work.

12. Ill health and malnutrition:
A large part of Bangladesh’s working population suffers from ill health and malnutrition. As a result, they are losing their performance day by day.

13. The vicious cycle of poverty
The economy of Bangladesh is stuck in a vicious cycle of poverty. Capital is not formed due to non-accumulation of “internal” effects of poverty. Lack of capital and lack of effective demand hampers investment and employment opportunities are gradually reduced.

14. Lack of labor mobility
Lack of education and skills of workers in Bangladesh reduces mobility due to lack of training, financial disparity and lack of improved transport system. As a result the problem of unemployment is increasing.
